Youths looking forward to getting out into the woods to take their first spring turkey will have a chance to do so at Jeffrey Energy Center.

The center, located 7 miles north of St. Marys, will host youth-season hunts April 1-17 for hunters age 12 to 16 who have never harvested a turkey. Experienced hunters and volunteers from the Westar Energy Green Team will serve as guides to youth hunters and their mentors as they seek out a big tom.

Registration is open through Friday, or until all slots are filled. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. To apply, please call (785) 575-6355.

Each hunter will need an adult mentor, preferably one without turkey hunting experience. A shotgun is required, but no special clothing, calls or decoys are needed. Hunters age 15 and older will need to purchase a youth spring turkey permit, while those who are 16 will need their Hunter Education certificate, a hunting license or apprentice hunting license and a United 3 turkey permit.
