CARBONDALE – Santa Fe Trail swept the West Franklin High School baseball team in Thursday’s final regular season doubleheader. The Falcons fell in Carbondale 9-8 and 18-2.

A five run top of the sixth in Game 1 gave West Franklin a 7-4 lead. The Chargers, however, responded with a five-run frame of their own in the ensuing half inning. West Franklin got a run back in the top of the seventh, but the rally ended there. The Falcons out-hit their opponent 12-10, but committed five errors.

The team scored two runs in the top of the first inning in the nightcap, but failed to keep SFT off the board in the three-inning contest. The Chargers strung together 14 hits, scoring eight runs in the first, four in the second and six in the third. West Franklin managed just four hits.

Nate Hower and Cade Hamilton had two RBIs apiece in Game 1. Hower had three hits, and Ryan Schmitz had two.

West Franklin (6-12) plays 2 p.m. Monday in the opening round of its 3A regional in Wellsville. The Falcons are the No. 6 seed and are set to play No. 3-seeded Osage City (13-7).


CARBONDALE – West Franklin’s prep softball team finished the regular season with a pair of close losses at Santa Fe Trail, 3-0 and 11-9.

Alexa McCurdy tallied West Franklin’s lone hit in Game 1. The Lady Falcons struck out 16 times, but did not commit an error on defense. Macayla Harmon backed up the solid fielding performance by tossing six innings, allowing three runs on one hit. She struck out 12 and walked eight.

In the nightcap, the Lady Falcons got within two runs after scoring three in the top of the fifth. Neither team managed to score in the final four frames.

McCurdy had a three-run bomb to lead her team in runs driven in. Medow Watts added two RBIs and two runs scored on three hits. Nevaeh Scott was a perfect 4-4 at the plate with an RBI.

West Franklin (7-11) is the No. 5 seed in its 3A regional tournament hosted by Council Grove. The team plays 3 p.m. Monday against the No. 4 seed Osage City (13-7).
