One of the KCAC’s top programs will look to continue its dominance in 2018-19.
The Ottawa University women’s soccer team was selected third out of 13 teams (Avila University joins the conference this year) in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference preseason polls. The Lady Braves received 125 total votes and one first-place vote, behind only Oklahoma Wesleyan and Kansas Wesleyan.
OU kicks off its season 7 p.m. Monday with a home scrimmage against Emporia State University. The regular season starts noon Aug. 25 at home against Dordt College.
The team has enjoyed success over the past decade and last year was no exception. Ottawa finished 17-4-1 and advanced to the NAIA Tournament Finals Site for the second consecutive year, ultimately falling to No. 2 University of Northwestern Ohio by a slim 2-1 margin.
OU enters 2018-19 with a streak of 10 straight winning seasons. During that span, the Braves compiled a 90-13-4 record in conference matches.
Ady Barraza, senior midfielder, was named to this year’s KCAC preseason team. The Olathe native finished 2017-18 with seven goals and five assists.
Following eight seasons with Ottawa, former head coach Marc Gordon left in the offseason for a spot at the helm of the Northwest Missouri State women’s soccer program. That paved the way for former University of Antelope Valley (California) head coach Roman Duchateau to take over the team heading into this season.
