After a winning season and a fourth-place conference finish last year, the Braves started the 2018-19 season with momentum.
The Ottawa University men’s soccer team clipped visiting Dordt College 3-2 in the season opener Saturday. It marked the first time since 2010 the program won its season-opening match.
Jose Alberto Garcia, junior midfielder, got the winning goal with less than three minutes to go in regulation (87:13 mark). He was assisted by Cain Scott, sophomore forward. It was Garcia’s third shot of the match, a team-leading number with teammate Lewis Verdouw, senior forward.
Verdouw scored the team’s other two goals, the first at the 26:46 mark in the first half to tie the score 1-1. The second came at the 61:25 mark in the second half to give the Braves their first lead. Dordt scored the equalizer 24 seconds later.
Ottawa led in shots 11-9 and shots-on-goal 6-5. John Spells, junior goalkeeper, had four saves for OU.
The Braves (1-0) are set to play 4:30 p.m. Saturday at home against Morningside College at Braves Field.
