HUTCHINSON — Ottawa University had a strong showing against conference rivals to kick off 2018-19.
The Lady Braves women’s volleyball squad finished 3-1 in the second annual Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Fall Fling tournament hosted Friday and Saturday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.
OU swept three of its four matches. The team’s lone loss came in a five-set thriller against eventual tournament champs McPherson College 25-23, 28-26, 24-26, 18-25, 15-12. Ottawa never led in the fifth set, but narrowed the lead to one point four times late (10-9, 11-10, 12-11, 13-12). Kinadie Wilcox, freshman outside hitter, executed two consecutive kills to give her team the 26-24 third set win.
Despite the close loss, the Lady Braves dominated in their other three matches. They beat Bethany College 25-15, 25-16, 25-18; Friends University 25-22, 25-21, 25-17 and the University of Saint Mary 25-17, 25-15, 25-20.
Kenna Hall, senior middle blocker, led the team with 54 kills through four matches. Ayona Tharps, sophomore outside hitter, finished with 50 total kills. Morgan Berry, freshman setter, had 171 total assists, and Liz Heit, senior libero, had 88 digs.
OU (3-1) plays Friday and Saturday in the Sarpy County Tourism Labor Day Classic hosted in Bellevue, Nebraska. The team plays 11 a.m. Friday against Peru State College, 7 p.m. Friday against No. 25 University of Jamestown, 11 a.m. Saturday against No. 11 Midland University and 5 p.m. Saturday against College of Saint Mary.
