The Garden City cross country team ran its first meet of the season Thursday night at the Great Bend Invitational, where the girls finished in third place and the boys nabbed second.
Top finishers on the 5-kilometer course for Garden City were senior Taylor Savolt, on the girls' side, finishing in ninth place with a time of 18:19.7. Junior Ethan Fisher finished tops for the boys with a seventh place in a time of 14:14.4.
“Overall, i think we ran pretty good,” said head coach Krista Linenberger of her team’s first run this season. “ I think this meet was a good indicator of where we’re at, and an eye opener for many of our kids and I think they saw that today.
“We are a young team. We don’t have many returning upperclass runners, and we are a bit of an inexperienced team."
The top two finishers for the Buffaloes, Savolt and Fisher, are some of those experienced runners from last year, and started off the year strong, with each posting a top ten finish.
“I think they ran pretty well, but I'm sure if you ask them, they would tell you they could have ran better,” Linenberger said. “It was a good place to start as both of them need some workouts underneath them to improve on this first race.”
Fisher, Savolt and the rest of the Buffs will look to build on the strong start when they travel to Hesston for the Swather Invitational next Thursday. Start time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
