Avila has arrived, at least in the eyes of writers and coaches polled for the Newton Kansan/Gatehouse Kansas KCAC Football Power Poll.

The Eagles are in their first year of play in the Kansas Collegiate Conference, and that led to them opening the season ranked 10th in most polls — including the Newton Kansan/Gatehouse Kansas KCAC Power Poll.

However, two convincing wins have the Eagles soaring to No. 2 — and receiving first place consideration from some pollsters.

Two teams from the KCAC remain ranked in the NAIA Coach’s Poll this week — Kansas Wesleyan at No. 16 and Sterling at No. 25. Kansas Wesleyan moved into the top spot of the Newton Kansan/Gatehouse Kansas KCAC Power Poll last week, and remains there this week. Sterling is sitting at third, right behind Avila.

This week a player to watch will be John Jacobs III of Avila. He scored an Avila record eight touchdowns (four on the ground and four in the air) while the offense racked up a record 705 yards as the Eagles knocked off the McPherson Bulldogs last week. He and the Eagles will play at Bethel College this week.

The KCAC Radio Network game of the week will be Tabor at Friends at 7 p.m. This week’s ESPN3 game of the week will be Southwestern at McPherson.
