WICHITA — John Avalos tallied 11 saves and Matt Steeper scored the game-winner Tuesday. The Ottawa University men’s soccer team grinded out a 2-1 win at Friends University in Wichita.

The Falcons out-shot Ottawa 29-10 (12-7 in shots-on-goal), but Avalos, junior goalkeeper, brought his save total on the season up to 52 with his double-digit save match.

Friends had a 1-0 lead at halftime, and OU scored both of its goals in the second half. Aaron Kavanagh, senior forward, scored at the 50:32 mark in the second half. Lewis Verdouw, senior forward, assisted Steeper, senior midfielder, on the winning goal with less than seven minutes left in the match.

The win brings Ottawa’s record back to .500 at 5-5-1 (3-2 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference). The team plays 7:30 p.m. Saturday at home against Southwestern College for Senior Night.

WOMEN

WICHITA — Friend’s Jazelle Gonzalez became the first KCAC player to score on Ottawa this season, but it wasn’t enough. The Ottawa University women’s soccer team downed the Falcons in Wichita 3-1 to remain unbeaten in conference play.

OU’s Samantha Mendoza, senior defender, scored back-to-back goals within the first 10 minutes of the match to give her team an early lead.

Gonzalez scored at the 55:21 mark in the second half, but the Lady Braves answered with a goal by Brooke Mays, senior forward, at the 68:11 mark.

Ottawa out-shot Friends 13-7 (10-3 in shots-on-goal).

The Lady Braves (9-2, 5-0 KCAC) host Southwestern College for Senior Night 5 p.m. Saturday.
