The question in front of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference at this time is thus: Who will challenge Kansas Wesleyan?

The Coyotes are a unanimous No. 1 selection in The Newton Kansan/GateHouse Kansas KCAC Football Power Poll — and for good reason.

KWU is undefeated in conference play, and they have destroyed everyone they have come across. The Coyotes have averaged 66.25 points per game in conference play, while only allowing 13.75 points per game. Overall, they have outscored the teams they have played 265-55.

That stretch of games has included downing Sterling, then ranked in the NAIA coaching poll, and Ottawa, ranked third in the power poll.

Kansas Wesleyan is currently ranked No. 11 in the NAIA Coaches Poll.

This week they will take on Saint Mary — who features this week’s top player to watch in the conference.

Nicholas Holmes will be key to Saint Mary’s efforts to slow down the Kansas Wesleyan offense.

Holmes leads the nation in interceptions per game (1.3) and is second in total interceptions this season with five. He ranks ninth in the nation for passes defended per game. In high school he was a two time All-State honoree as a quarterback and safety at Pleasant Ridge in Kansas where he rushed for more than 1,000 yards in both his junior and senior seasons.

This week the KCAC ESPN3 game of the week is scheduled to be Bethany (1-5) at Friends (0-5). The KCAC radio network game of the week is slated to be McPherson (3-1) at Bethel (0-4) for the Thresher’s annual Fall Fest game.
