COUNCIL GROVE — Franklin County’s smallest school continues to make the loudest noise with the fastest legs.
Central Heights cross country obliterated the competition Thursday at the Flint Hills League championships for three league team titles and two individual championships from middle school up to varsity prep. In the varsity boys 5K, the Vikings did what they have done all season — win. Tyler Stevenson took first overall with a time of 17:45, and Caleb Meyer placed third with a time of 18:05. All team runners finished in the top 20.
“On paper, the boys race was much of the same with Tyler Stevenson again coming in first and bringing another individual league title; Caleb and Bryce [Sommer’s] consistency were the steadying force needed to bring the team its first Flint Hills League championship,” Troy Prosser, Central Heights head cross country coach, said.
Lily Meyer won the varsity girls 5K individual league title as a freshman, finishing with a time of 21:10. Junior Madison Bridges wasn’t far behind with a 21:43 time, good enough for third overall.
The future looks bright for the Vikings. Both the middle school boys and girls teams own unofficial league championships. Emma Cubit paced the girls with a two-mile time of 13:04 and a runner-up performance. Connor Burkdoll led the boys with a fifth-place finish and a 12:12 time.
“[Our middle schoolers] work just as hard as anyone else, never get the headlines, but still compete and finish with a smile on their faces,” Prosser said.
Central Heights is set to compete in the 2A regional Oct. 20 at Burlington (John Redmond Resevoir). Teams in the regional besides the Vikings are: Northeast (Arma), Southeast (Cherokee), Hillsboro, West Elk, Humboldt, Bluestem, Marion, Jayhawk-Linn, Oswego, St. Mary’s Colgan, Pleasanton, Uniontown, Remington, Wichita Independent and Yates Center.
West Franklin didn’t walk away from the Flint Hills League meet without gathering hardware either. The team collected 15 medals and a league championship. The varsity girls were back at full strength to finish first as a team, paced by Maddie Montgomery. She was league runner-up with a 5K time of 21:24.
The varsity boys placed fifth overall and were led by Jeremy Haverkamp, who earned 11th with a time of 18:39.
Every middle school runner had a personal best in difficult conditions. Emma Bailey was the middle school girls two-mile champion, running a time of 12:35. Kyle Haner placed third in the boys two-mile with a time of 11:15.
“The course was slick, but these runners powered through to some great finishes,” Ryan Hahn, West Franklin head cross country coach, said.

BURLINGTON — Due to the John Redmond Dam being flooded, Wellsville’s Pioneer League Meet was shifted to the road. That didn’t stop the Eagles from earning strong individual performances.
Senior Paige McDaniel earned first-team all-league with a third-place effort in the varsity girls 5K. Her time was 19:53.
“They got it as close as they could to the distances, so the times are adjusted using an online race calculator,” Timothy Savage, Wellsville head cross country coach, said. “About a perfect day to run [Thursday] though. It is Paige’s fourth consecutive all-league performance.”
The varsity boys team was paced by Ethan Elliot, who earned second-team all-league honors with a 14th-place finish. His time was 17:41.
Karizma Shay was runner-up in the seventh-grade girls two-mile, finishing with a time of 12:37.
