A pair of wins has Ottawa on the upswing heading into its final regular season match.
The Ottawa High School boys soccer team (9-6) plays 6 p.m. today at home against Paola (8-7) on Senior Night. Ottawa previously won at Paola 2-0 in early September.
“[Paola is] playing really well, so it will be a good game,” Roland Jaworski, OHS head boys soccer coach, said. “If we win that game, it will really help our seeding for regionals.”
Following a 1-2 performance last week, the Cyclones have won two matches in two days — beating Highland Park 3-2 Monday in Topeka, and Louisburg 3-2 Tuesday at home.
All three of Ottawa’s goals against Louisburg came off of free kicks. Seniors Dylan Fanning and Michael Powell had a goal each, and fellow senior Marshall Altendorf scored off of another free kick by Fanning. The team had a 3-1 lead over the Wildcats until Louisburg scored with 18:24 left. The OHS defense kept the score to that until the final whistle.
Collin Hanson, senior, scored the game-winner with eight minutes left against Highland Park. Reece Fogle, freshman, and Powell had a goal each.
“It has been a total team process,” Jaworski said. “We have had a lot of good substitutions too. There have been a lot of younger guys coming off the bench and playing really well.”
As of Wednesday, Ottawa is ranked fourth out of 17 teams in the 4A-1A Northeast Regional.
