A gritty, three-set win got the Lady Cyclones to the title match. There, however, they ran into one of the toughest opponents in the state.

The Ottawa High School volleyball team ousted Tonganoxie 25-14, 17-25, 25-19 in its opening match Saturday to advance to the championship against host Independence. The Lady Cyclones gave the top overall seed in 4A a good fight, but ultimately fell in straight sets 25-22, 25-13.

Through both matches OHS tallied 61 kills versus 29 attacking errors. Payton Bruce, senior, led the team with 24 total kills, 13 of which came against Independence. Molly Olmsted, sophomore, added 18 kills. Darby Weidl, sophomore, had 22 digs, 17 coming against Tonganoxie. Allina Kerns, senior, added 18 digs. Kirsten Evans, freshman, had 52 assists.

The team says goodbye to four seniors — Kerns, Bruce, Juliet Lane and Rachel Wilcox.

Ottawa finishes its season 15-23.
