TECUMSEH — Victory was in reach Friday for the Lady Cyclones. Shawnee Heights snatched it away in the closing minutes during the non-league game in Tecumseh, beating the Ottawa High School girls basketball team 39-35.

The Lady Cyclones had a 24-19 lead at halftime and led by as many as nine points in the third quarter.

The team, however, did not hit a field goal in the final eight minutes.

“We changed our lineup and went with a little more athleticsm,” Duane Colwell, OHS head girls basketball coach, said. “That got us off to a good start. We had a couple of bad possessions, but we are young and still understanding game situations, which we haven’t spent a lot of time talking about. Those are things we talked about after the game.”

Trailing 37-35, OHS came up empty on a possession inside of a minute to play.

Alie Fulks hit a pair of free throws for Shawnee Heights after being intentionally fouled to extend the lead to four. Ottawa failed to score in the final seconds.

Freshman Sofia Ficken led the Lady Cyclones with 10 points, while Fulks led all scorers with 14.
