PAOLA — Ottawa scored a combined four points in the first and third quarters, falling Friday at Paola 51-23. It was the final game of December heading into winter break.
Coming off its first win of the season, the Lady Cyclones prep basketball team (1-4) stumbled out of the gate in their first league game. Paola scored the first 14 points of the game into the second quarter.
OHS fought back to make it 19-11 at halftime behind nine made free throws in the second quarter.
It was short-lived, however, as the Lady Panthers opened the second half on a 19-1 run to pull out of reach.
“We pretty much let Paola do whatever they wanted to do,” Duane Colwell, OHS head girls basketball coach, said. “They beat us in the effort areas — rebounding and defense. We let them have way too many offensive rebounds because we didn’t have the effort to go block out. That is what we talked about in the locker room, you have to bring it every time. You are not going to have a good shooting night in an oppnent’s gym, so you have to be excellent on the defensive end. That was the tone. Our defense wasn’t there so our offense wasn’t either.”
OHS returns to action Jan. 8 at Baldwin.
