VERLAND PARK — A 12-0 run late elevated Topeka Hayden past Ottawa in Saturday’s 810 Varsity Showcase game. The morning after its Friday night game in Tonganoxie, the Ottawa High School boys basketball team faced Hayden in the opening game of the showcase, hosted at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Overland Park. It was a close game throughout, but Hayden’s late run gave them the 67-56 win.

The Cyclones took their first lead since the first quarter when Kobe Johnson made a basket-and-one with 4:38 left to make it 48-46 Ottawa. From there, Hayden went on its run to recapture the lead for good.

The boys (4-3) will play one game this week, 7:30 p.m. today at Baldwin before tournament week starting next Tuesday at the Bobcat Invitational in Basehor-Linwood.

“Any time you play back-to-back, it helps you in tournaments, but you play back-to-back and sometimes back-to-back-to-back in the state tournament,” Cliff McCullough, OHS head boys basketball coach, said. “It familiarizes our guys with quick turnarounds and how you have to let one game go and immediately start focusing on the next game. It also teaches them to learn the adjustments we want to make with very limited court time.”
