SUBLETTE — In the two early quarterfinal games of the Hi-Plains League girls tournament in Sublette, second-seed Cimarron and top-seed Meade pulled off wins. The late games, however, were another story as both of the lower seeds managed to secure the upset. Fifth-seed Elkhart downed fourth-seed Syracuse in overtime, 53-50, and sixth-seed Sublette downed third-seed Stanton County, 43-39.

Meade and Elkhart will meet in the early semifinal (6 p.m.) on Thursday at Garden City Community College, while Cimarron and Sublette will play in the late (7:45 p.m.) semifinal.

The boys' tournament opens Tuesday in Sublette.

Cimarron 55, SW Heights 42

In the first quarterfinal, Cimarron held off a game Southwestern Heights squad, 55-42.

The Bluejays led 30-16 at halftime, but a 19-11 third quarter sparked the Mustangs before they succumbed to the second seed in the fourth.

Clara Bartlett led Cimarron with 16 points, Taylor Jantz had 12 and Cameren Bartlett added 11. The Jays were just 13 of 26 from the free throw line.

Heights got 11 points from Tagan Couch and 10 from Susana Carrillo.

In another early quarterfinal, the top seed Meade Buffaloes took out Lakin, 62-36.

Liberty Luetters led Meade with 18 points and Katey Wilhelm added 13.

Lakin’s top scorer was Jaya Esquibel with 12 points and Talyn Beltran with 11.

Isabella Desaire scored 11 points to lead her Sublette Larks to the 43-39 win in the opener of the HPL tournament. Sublette had a 15-9 lead after the first quarter, and a 23-17 lead at halftime.
