Tired of elections? More on the horizon

By JENALEA MYERS, Herald Staff Writer

As the dust from one election settles, another one is stirring.

The deadline is approaching quickly for Franklin Countians interested in running for school board or city council positions.

County Clerk Shari Perry said the filing deadline is noon Jan. 27. The filing fee is $5, except for the City of Ottawa, which is $10.

She said all cities except the City of Ottawa file in the county clerk’s office, 315 S. Main St., or with their city clerk. The City of Ottawa files with the city clerk at City Hall, 101 S. Hickory St. School board positions are filed in the county clerk’s office.

If a primary election is needed, it will be March 3, and the general election will be April 7, Perry said. The number of positions available determines the number of candidates needed to file in order to hold a primary.

Available city council positions include:

• Lane — mayor and three council positions

• Pomona — mayor and two council positions

• Princeton — mayor and five council positions

• Rantoul — mayor and five council positions

• Richmond — mayor and two council positions

• Wellsville — three council positions

• Williamsburg — three council positions

• Ottawa — two four-year terms and one two-year term

Available school board positions include:

• Central Heights — Positions 4 (Princeton), 5 (Richmond) and 6 (Lane)

• West Franklin — Positions 4 (Appanoose), 5 (Pomona) and 6 (Williamsburg)

• Wellsville — Positions 4 (City of Wellsville), 5 (north of LeLoup Road) and 6 (south of LeLoup Road)

• Ottawa — three at-large positions
