Freeway alongside U.S. 59 coming

By The Herald Staff

Travelers heading to Lawrence soon will see surfacing on the new U.S. 59 highway.

A contract to surface the 7.6-mile stretch on U.S. 59 from I-35 northeast of Ottawa north to the Franklin-Douglas county line was awarded by the Kansas Department of Transportation to Koss Construction Co. and Subsidiaries, Topeka, for more than $19.8 million.

In 1997, KDOT began environmental studies and conceptual designs to evaluate the need for improvements to U.S. 59. This eventually led to a proposal that consisted of an entirely new four-lane expressway from Lawrence to a connection to I-35 northeast of Ottawa.

The freeway will be about 18 miles long and generally will parallel existing U.S. 59, except where it bypasses to the east of Pleasant Grove and near Ottawa. At Ottawa, the plan is for the new U.S. 59 to connect with I-35 at a new interchange northeast of the city.

When the cost of the project, which is scheduled to be completed in 2011, was estimated in 2007, the cost of the construction totaled about $185.4 million.

The total cost of the project, which includes construction, right of way, construction engineering and utilities, is about $214 million.
