SALINA SOUTH — The Ottawa High School wrestling team faced good competition Saturday in the Salina South Tournament.
“We really wrestled much better than the records show,” Ottawa coach Joe Tokarz said.
Ottawa finished seventh with six wrestlers placing in the top six.
Tokarz said the tourney featured state-ranked teams from the 6A and 4A divisions. Manhattan won the tourney followed by Junction City and Colby.
Individually, there were some tough classes. Tokarz said Cale Paquette, Virgil George and Mickey Jensen faced defending champions in their weight classes.
“They all wrestled great,” Tokarz said. “Hunter [Peoples} had to injury default the final match due to a head injury. Connor {Gross], Dalton {Weidl] and Caleb [Parenti] all had great days. Sam [Carver] had his best tournament yet.
“We now have to move past just making the finals and now begin to expect to be in the finals.”
Carver and Peoples finished second. Gross, Weidl and Parenti were fourth. Brandin Bell finished sixth.
