Variety show returning with magic, music to benefit cancer foundation

By BRIAN WILLIAMS, Herald Staff Writer

The Franklin County Cancer Foundation’s Fourth Annual Variety Show returns with nearly all new performers.

This year’s show at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Ottawa Municipal Auditorium, 301 S. Hickory St., includes magic by Scott Dickinson; individual musical performances from Sara Crawford, Russ Coffman and Chelsea Brown; and group musical performances from the Ottawa Brass and the Lintners.

“All the performers other than the Lintners are new to the variety show. Although the Lintners did not perform last year, they did the first two years,” Darlene Armstrong, foundation president, said.

“This show is for all ages. The Rev. Scott Dickinson’s magic act is enjoyed by the children, but adults will admit they love it, too,” Armstrong said.

“Adding the youthful energy of Chelsea Brown and Sara Crawford to share their beautiful voices this year is exciting,” she said. “They have both been in Cytones as has Russ Coffman who will croon also.”

“We are thrilled to have the Ottawa Brass this year to add a totally new dimension to our show. The Lintners never fail to have a few surprises for the audience with their incredible repertoire,” Armstrong said.

Last year’s show raised $1,081.48 which was down more than $100 from the previous two years. Armstrong said the show was rescheduled because of the weather and she believed that contributed to a lower turnout.

The Franklin County Cancer Foundation is an all-volunteer group formed in the spring of 1998 to aid cancer patients in Franklin County. The only requirements for assistance are being a Franklin County resident and having active cancer.

Assistance ranges from durable medical equipment like hospital beds, lift chairs, shower stools, wheelchairs and walkers to gas cards to go to appointments, Armstrong said.
