West Franklin, CH girls post tourney victories

EMPORIA — The West Franklin High School girls basketball team found another gear Thursday in the second half of its Flint Hills League Tournament game in Emporia.

The Falcons were down by 12 at halftime to Herington and put together their best half of basketball this season. West Franklin opened the second half with an 11-0 run and rode that momentum to a 41-38 victory.

“We were much more focused and determined,” West Franklin coach Kyle Conley said. “We stayed out of foul trouble.

Sierra Miller finished with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Emily Reed had 12 points and seven rebounds.

West Franklin plays noon today in the fifth-place game against Mission Valley.

Herington (38) — Remeier 5, Blackwell 4, Heirfield 8, Morgan 9, Jones 9, Hart 3.

West Franklin (41) — Reed 12, Steele 7, Shaffer 2, Whittington 2, Yelland 6, Miller 12.

Central Heights 56, Crest 27

PLEASANTON — Central Heights played its best game of the season Thursday in a 56-27 win over Crest in the Pleasanton Invitational.

The 56 points was a season-high and Crest did not score more than nine points in any quarter.

“We played great defense after the first quarter,” Central Heights coach Scott Lane said. “We came out a little flat but we found our rhythm defensively after the first quarter and we held them to two points in the second quarter.”

Whitney Kraus paced the offense with a season-best 20 points. Brianna Erhart had 12.

“Whitney Kraus showed what kind of scorer she can be,” Lane said. “She did a great job of attacking and getting the free-throw line more.”

Central Heights plays 2:30 p.m. today against Pleasanton.    

Central Heights (56) — Erhart 12, Kraus 20, Stegner 6, Markley 5, Meyer 9, Hayward 4.

Crest (27) — Covey 2, Gilliand 12, LaCross 7, Kellar 2.

Anderson County 43, Wellsville 35

WELLSVILLE — It was a tale of two halves for both Wellsville and Anderson County.

Wellsville scored 25 of its 35 points in the first half, while Anderson County scored 32 of its 43 in the second half.

It added up to a 43-35 win for the Bulldogs.

“We played a great first half but were unable to continue it the second half,” Wellsville coach Brock Campbell said. “We had trouble scoring in the second half and had too many turnovers.”

Darcy Bonzo paced Wellsville with 13 points. Macy Adams led the Bulldogs with 17 points.

Both teams play in the Top Gun Tournament next week in Wellsville.

Anderson County plays 5:15 p.m. Tuesday against Spring Hill, while Wellsville plays 6:45 p.m. versus Bonner Springs. Semifinals are Thursday.

Wellsville (35) — Bonzo 13, Sparks 8, Cunningham 8, Newhouse 2, Kayhill 2, Strawn 2.

Anderson County (43) — Adams 17, Scheckel 8, Stevenson 6, Ratcliff 6, Mersman 4, Moody 2.
