Speaker to examine ‘history mystery’

By BRIAN WILLIAMS, Herald Staff Writer

An area “history mystery” will be examined Sunday.

Peggy Clark, Washburn University photographer and member of Osage County Historic Preservation, will speak on the “Sac and Fox Indian House Mystery” at the Franklin County Historical Society’s 72nd annual meeting of members 2 p.m. Sunday at the Franklin County Records & Research Center, 1124 W. Seventh St. Terrace, Ottawa.

“It’s a very interesting part of early Kansas history,” Deb Barker, Franklin County Historical Society director, said.

The mystery surrounds a log cabin that recently was moved to Lyndon’s City Park from just east of Lyndon.

The cabin originally was located on land that was the site of a known Fox village and was located just across the creek from a documented Indian house, Clark said.

The dimensions of the cabin somewhat matched those that Robert S. Stevens was contracted to build for the Sac and Fox Indians in the 1860s. Lyndon’s cabin is a two-story cabin, which adds to the intrigue.

“That it is a two-story log house was unusual for the time,” Clark said. “In some of the things that we had read, it was indicated that the houses that were to be built for the chiefs were to be two-story, and/or more opulent than the others.”

The PBS television program, “History Detectives,” took a crack at solving the mystery. After a year of work the “History Detectives” ran out of time and moved on to other projects, she said.

The meeting’s agenda also includes: reporting of the accomplishments of 2008, new trustees will be elected, plans for 2009 will be presented, and First Families of Franklin County certificates will be awarded to applicants.

The public is invited to the meeting and refreshments will be served.

In case of inclement weather, call (785) 242-1232 or (785) 418-3810. The event’s bad weather date will be Feb. 1.
