Across the state of Kansas, a worsening economy threatens to magnify what many social services agency officials contend already has been a growing problem for Kansas this decade — poverty.

POVERTY: Recession expected to worsen poverty

The executive director at First Call for Help of Ellis County, Amy Bryant, already can see the local effects of the nation’s economic recession.

Layoffs in the area have led to an increased demand for services through the non-profit, she said. One of its programs, funded through the Salvation Army and Ellis County Ministerial Alliance, provides emergency assistance for such things as utility bills, mortgage payments and other financial strains.
