Volunteer Opportunities

To post volunteer needs for your nonprofit agency or to learn about more volunteer opportunities, contact the Volunteer Center, a service of ECKAN, 1320 S. Ash St., at 242-7450 ext. 205 or lrivers@eckan.org.

Back Snack – Food for Children Program

People who are willing to dedicate four Friday afternoons or one month can help with the elementary Back Snack program.  The Back Snack program provides a weekend’s worth of nutritious food for children who do not reliably have food during the course of the weekend. From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays, volunteers clean back-packs from the previous week and from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays, volunteers pack food into bags for distribution to students. If you are willing to take a few hours out of your lives to help raise our children, please call Rachel Smith at (785) 242-0670.

Prom dress project

Allow local teens to experience an extremely memorable event. The Ottawa Volunteer Center is collecting new or slightly used formal dresses and accessories to be distributed to young ladies in Franklin County who may not otherwise be able to afford these items for prom. Dresses of all colors and sizes are accepted. To donate dresses or to indicate a need for a formal gown for a young lady in need, call Lisa Rivers at the ECKAN Volunteer Center, (785) 242-7450 ext. 205 or e-mail lrivers@eckan.org.  Prom Boutique 2009 is tentatively scheduled for early March.

Compeer

Compeer is seeking youth mentors. Volunteers serve as positive mentors for children who are receiving mental health services. Free training and social activities will be provided by Compeer monthly. This monthly activity will be kid-friendly and only available to children and their mentor. Volunteers are asked to spend a minimum four hours each month with their matched youth. If interested, contact Alli Jackson at (785) 242-3780 ext. 314 or e-mail ajackson@laytoncenter.org.

Empty Bowls

Civic groups, businesses, youth groups, families and individuals are being sought to volunteer with Empty Bowls, a fundraising and awareness event that sells handmade bowls at a soup-and-bread dinner at the Ottawa High School Cyclone Room Feb. 20. To volunteer yourself or your group, call Cari Haliburton, Learn & Serve coordinator for East Central Kansas Area Agency on Aging, at (785) 242-7200.  Proceeds from Empty Bowls 2009 will benefit local food pantries.
