Too few candidates to warrant primaries

Filing deadline passes for April 7 local election

By JENALEA MYERS, Herald Staff Writer

No primary will be needed in the coming city council and school board elections.

Tuesday was the deadline to file, and no race has enough candidates to require a primary election. The number of available positions determines the number of candidates needed to have a primary.

A lack of candidates will leave some positions on the Lane, Princeton and Rantoul city councils and the Lane mayoral position up to write-in votes.

The Pomona City Council and Ottawa city council and school board will be the most hotly contested races in the April 7 election.

Two candidates will vie for Pomona mayor while five candidates will compete for only two council positions. Six candidates will face off for three Ottawa City Council positions, and six candidates are eyeing three spots on the Ottawa School Board.

City council candidates include:

• Pomona — Joann Hancock and Richard Adler, mayor; Lawrence Case, Joe Goracke, Don Lockaby, Marie Seneca and Bill Lloyd Sr., council. Mayor and two council positions are open.

• Ottawa — Rocky Fleer, Linda Reed, Gene Ramsey, Jeff Richards, Shawn Dickinson and Helen Hood, council. Three at-large positions are open.

• Lane — Deanna Carroll and Larry Bryant, council. Positions open include mayor and three council positions.

• Princeton — Donna Magee, mayor; Chris Hutchinson, Kathy Jones, Ronnie Lee and Carol Lingo, council. Mayor and five council positions are open.

• Rantoul — Sean Lickteig, mayor; Blanka Bellinger, Pat Hutchinson, Ron Parks, Don Covington, council. Mayor and five council positions are open.

• Richmond — Mary Ann Platt, mayor; Betty Bowlby and Shelden Snow, council. Mayor and two council positions are open.

• Wellsville — Marvin Hutchinson, Jared Eggleston, Tim Jamison, Dave Rogers and Ryan Young, council. Three council positions are open.

• Williamsburg — Gene Hirt, Dennis Norton and Pennie Westfall, council. Three council positions are open. Hirt previously filed for West Franklin School Board but withdrew and filed for Williamsburg City Council.

School board candidates include:

• Central Heights — Ron Sluder, Position 6; Shane Oram and Angela Weiderholt, Position 5; Jack Davis and Doug Malone, Position 4.

• West Franklin — Stacy Hower, Position 4; Sherry Harris, Positions 5; Thayne Bush and Marvin Zorn, Position 6.

• Wellsville — Ron Bloss, Position 4; Clyde Coons and Lou Meyer, Position 5; Juanita Peckman, Position 6.

• Ottawa — Jeanette Lowry, Marge Stevens, Darrell Bourque, Brandon Jones, Roger Lawrence and MaLinda Manis filed. Three at-large positions are open.
