ASK A PROFESSIONAL: ‘Hoops for Haiti’ club members take shots at compassion

By LINDA BROWN, Ask a Professional

They’re not only smart, they’re kind, compassionate and in tune with their global responsibility.

They’re Ottawa High School’s National Honor Society students, and they’ve launched a clever and fun campaign to raise money to help with the ongoing recovery efforts in earthquake torn Haiti.

It’s called “Hoops for Haiti” and area individuals and businesses are being asked to help raise funds by sponsoring one of three top scorers on either the boys or girls Cyclone basketball teams throughout the rest of the regular playing season.

Here’s how it works. You pick one of six players, pledge a specific amount you will pay for each basket that player makes starting with the first game in February and ending with the last regular season game in March.

NHS members will keep the stats and let you know at the end of the season how many total baskets your player made. You’ll multiply your basket pledge amount by the number of baskets made and pay up your pledge.

When all the pledges are collected, NHS adviser Michelle Wilmes will write a check to the American Red Cross/Haiti Earthquake Relief and a little piece of caring and concern will be delivered, on behalf of Ottawa, to our devastated neighbors to the south.

The six player candidates for sponsors are Kearsten Peoples, Jordan Baldwin and Shelby Miller from the girls team and Semi Ojeleye, Adam Hasty and Kevin Barber from the boys team.

So how much should you pledge per basket? That’s up to you, of course, but if you pledge $1 per basket and your player scores 10 baskets per game, that’s $10 per game. There are seven games left in the season for each team, so your total pledge would be $70.

As a guide, the following are the average number of baskets made per game by each of the six players: Peoples, 12; Baldwin, 14.7; Miller, 8.2; Ojeleye, 15; Hasty, 12.1; and Barber, 11.6.

It’s fun, requires very little effort on our part and supports our youth in the decision they’ve made to help make a difference in the lives of people they likely will never meet.

I’m going to sponsor Adam Hasty at $1 per basket. To pick your player, you may contact any NHS member or Michelle Wilmes at (785) 229-8020 ext. 2134.
