There’s another message behind automaker’s woes

Much has been said recently about Toyota’s decision to recall some of its most popular and best-selling models after discovering a potential problem with the vehicles’ accelerator pedals.

“Toyota recall shows how lean manufacturing can backfire,” read one headline from the Wall Street Journal. A columnist for the Toronto Star opined that Toyota’s legacy of quality disappeared years before the most recent recall, and numerous stories and news broadcasts from around the country pointed out what seems to be obvious — that the recall hurt Toyota’s image.
