Rural grass fire now contained
Fire Chief Dave Gibbs, Lincoln-Ottawa-Harrison Township Fire Department, is shown about 1 p.m. Tuesday near 4821 Louisiana Terrace, giving instructions to members of the Centropolis Township Fire Department who had just arrived on the scene of a grass fire. The fire may have been ignited by the resident burning trash or plant debris, but that has not been confirmed, Gibbs said.
The grass fire came within about 30 feet of the home of at the aforementioned address but did not damage it. LOH and Centropolis fire departments were able to get the fire under control quickly, as it was pushed steadily south by the light north wind. The extremely dry conditions may cause more fires across the county, Gibbs warned. “If it doesn’t rain we’ll be seeing a lot more,” he said as he watched the blaze eat up dead grass and small trees.
