WINFIELD — Victory at last. The Ottawa University men’s basketball team snapped a five-game losing streak Saturday with a 75-63 win over Southwestern in Winfield.

Ottawa had not won since Jan. 19 at home against Kansas Wesleyan. It was just the third conference road win of the season.

The victory moved Ottawa into a three-way tie for fifth place in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference with two games left. Ottawa, Southwestern and Bethany have 6-10 marks.

This was Ottawa’s third win in the past nine games against Southwestern, which nipped Ottawa earlier this season, 96-92 in overtime.

Ottawa needed a big second half to erase a 27-26 halftime deficit. Ottawa shot 48 percent from the field and outscored the Moundbuilders 49-36 in the second half.

Ottawa dominated the boards, 52-33. Ottawa snared 19 offensive rebounds and turned them into a 21-2 advantage in second-chance points.

The Braves had a 35-21 points in the paint advantage.

Ottawa’s troubles started with the overtime loss to the Moundbuilders in January. Ottawa missed two game-winning shots at the buzzer and fell to Bethel on a last-second half-court shot this past Thursday.

Senior Corey Smith had his second double-double in three games and seventh this season with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

It was his seventh game with more than 10 rebounds. The senior hit eight of 17 field goals.

Kameron Lindsay netted 13. Julian Rose came off of the bench to score 11. Adam Hasty led Ottawa with six assists.

Ottawa (9-17, 6-10) plays 8 p.m. Thursday in Leavenworth against KCAC leader Saint Mary (14-2), which is 2-2 in the past four games.

The Spires won their first 12 conference games. Saint Mary is coming off a 77-75 loss to Tabor.

Southwestern (63) — Morales 1, Johnson 4, Tyler 8, Thaw 3, Tisdale 17, Shirley 5, Lipsey 15, Clark 10.

Ottawa (75) — Smith 19, Regier 6, Lindsay 13, Hasty 8, Dippel 6, Rose 11, Feighny 8, Lundry 4.
