Big sixth innings push OU softball to sweep

BALDWIN CITY — The Ottawa University softball team erupted in the sixth inning in both games Saturday in the sweep of Baker University in Baldwin City.

Ottawa was held scoreless in the opener until the Lady Braves scored three runs in the sixth inning. The Lady Braves rallied for an 8-7 win in eight innings.

Ottawa was held scoreless in the opener until the Lady Braves scored three runs in the sixth inning. The Lady Braves rallied for an 8-7 win in eight innings.

The nightcap saw Ottawa break through for six runs in the sixth inning to spearhead a 7-4 victory.

Ottawa finished with 20 hits — eight in the opener and 12 in the nightcap — in the doubleheader.

The opener saw Baker score three run in the first inning and one in the third and fifth for a 5-0 lead.

Ottawa scored three runs in the sixth inning. Cady Blevins started the rally for the Lady Braves with an infield single. Alyssa Miller followed with an infield single. Senior shortstop Amanda Martinsen blasted a three-run home run over the left field fence and Ottawa cut the deficit to two, 5-3.

Baker added one in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 6-3 lead. Ottawa rallied back in the seventh inning.

Miller smacked a three-run double to tie the game at 6-6. Ottawa scored two in the eighth inning. One run came on a Baker error and the other one on Becca Dunlop’s RBI single. Ottawa led 8-6.

Baker scored one in the eighth.

Martinsen led the Ottawa offense with three hits, three RBIs and scored a run. Miller had two hits, scored two runs and drove home three.

Hailie Ray started and went five innings. She had five strikeouts. Morgan Beckler picked up the victory as she went the final three innings. Baker had 12 hits.

The second game saw Ottawa take a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Darin Lewis reached base on with an infield single. She advanced second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on a throwing error.

Baker scored three in the bottom of the third for a  3-1 lead.

Ottawa plated six in the sixth inning for a 7-3 lead. Mikayla Oliphant had an RBI single. Lynna Kays drove home two with a double.

Cady Blevins, Becca Dunlop, Oliphant, Kays and Lewis had two hits apiece. Kays had two RBIs. Miller, Lewis and Blevins stole bases.          

Morgan Shramek picked up the victory in going the distance.

Ottawa (2-0) plays 1:30 p.m. Saturday at home against Grand View University.
