Veteran officer becoming lieutenant

By JODIE GARCIA, Herald Staff Writer

A 13-year police veteran is moving up to lieutenant at the Ottawa Police Department.

Effective Saturday, Sgt. Adam Weingartner will be promoted to the rank of lieutenant and will command the patrol division and oversee daily activities of all patrol personnel, a news release from Chief Dennis Butler said.

Weingartner has served as a patrol sergeant since October 2006.

Weingartner competed in a promotional process consisting of a writing exercise, panel interview, verbal presentation, performance review and interview with the chief of police, Butler said in the release.

Assessors for this process included professionals from various entities, including law enforcement and human resources, he said.

The process was designed to measure each candidate’s knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties of a police lieutenant. Qualities include interpersonal skills; basic job knowledge involving state, local and federal statutes; effective crime scene management, employee supervision, problem-solving, effective writing, verbal skills when addressing citizen groups, and past work performance.

“I am very pleased with the results of this promotional process,” Butler said, adding that the process was conducted in a fair, impartial manner. “Because of the long-term effect any promotion has on the police department, Lt. Weingartner and I had lengthy discussions about our mission, the importance of excellent leadership and my overall philosophy regarding public service.

“I believe that his promotion will result in continued steps forward regarding the professional development for our agency. This development never ends and is critical to providing excellent service.”

Weingartner grew up in Greenfield Center, N.Y., and graduated from high school in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

He earned an associate’s degree of applied science in criminal justice from the State University of New York at Canton and has earned additional credits toward his bachelor’s degree.

He served from 1992 to 1995 in the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Riley. He was honorably discharged in 1995 to begin work with the Ottawa Police Department.

Weingartner and his wife of nine years, Staci, are parents of two sons, Addison, 7, and Alexander, 5. The family lives in Ottawa.

In addition to his patrol command duties, Weingartner will oversee the reserve police officer unit, Butler said. For several years, Weingartner has coordinated the Special Olympics Torch Run and fundraising activities for the police department.

“The citizens of Ottawa should have every confidence in this promotion and know that Lt. Weingartner possesses a strong commitment to earning the public trust and providing the best possible service,” Butler said.
