Weidl, Peoples advance to the state tournament

TONGANOXIE — Ottawa High School seniors Dalton Weidl and Hunter Peoples advanced to the 4A state wrestling tournament by placing in the top four Friday and Saturday in the Tonganoxie regional.

Dalton Weidl won the 182-pound weight division. Peoples finished fourth at 145.

Weidl (38-6) opens the state tournament Friday against Colby’s Beau Brown (29-11). Brown was a fourth-place finisher in his regional.

Peoples (26-12) faces Holton’s Lane Lassiter (33-3) in a first-round match in Salina.

The state tourney runs Friday and Saturday in the Bicentennial Center.

Weidl received a first-round bye at regionals and swept through all three opponents en route to the regional title. He defeated Tonganoxie’s Luke Carey, 4-2, in the championship match.

Peoples also received a first-round bye. He won his quarterfinal match, but fell in the semifinals. He defeated De Soto’s Isaac Stevens, 5-3, in the consolation semifinals to earn a state berth. He lost 9-2 to Bonner Springs’ Bryan Lanning in the third-place match.
