‘Spring Fling’ to combat break boredom

By BRIAN WILLIAMS, Herald Staff Writer

Ottawa’s spring break tradition, “Spring Fling,” returns for the 11th year Saturday.

“Spring Fling” is sponsored by the Franklin County Children’s Coalition and organized to provide family oriented activities to those within the county who do not have the resources to take vacations.

“We want to provide positive things for the kids to do,” Tod Scott, Franklin County Children’s Coalition and Spring Fling committee member, said.

Spring Fling attendance has reached nearly 7,000 the past two years, and events can fill up fast, he said.

“You need to be there half an hour to an hour ahead of time. The movies sold out in 10 to 12 minutes last year,” Scott said.

Most events are free, but some cost $1 or require a non-perishable food item for admission.

“Because of the economy, we tried to do as many as we could without cost,” Scott said.

The one exception to the $1 fee is the dance for high school aged students, which will be $5. The charge is because the dance will have the bands Clash of Factions and Chocolate for the Woodwork performing. The admission charge will go to pay the bands, Scott said.

One goal for this year’s edition was to have more father-son activities.

A new activity that meets this goal is The First Tee of Greater Kansas City, which will introduce children to golf Saturday at the Ottawa Country Club, 1001 S. Logan St.

“This is a very, very elite golf clinic for kids,” Scott said about the program which includes the United States Golf Association, the Professional Golfers Association and the Ladies Professional Golfers Association among its founding partners.

The event will be moved to Ottawa University’s Mabee Center, 1001 S. Cedar St., in case of inclement weather.

Another goal the committee met was adding a second concert.

Life Church Worship Team will be in concert from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Ottawa Municipal Auditorium, 301 S. Hickory St. A free dinner of grilled chicken, roasted potatoes, corn, tea, lemonade and water will be served.

Canned goods and non-perishable food items for Hope House will be collected at the concert.

The activities will begin March 14 with the 14th annual Children’s Health and Safety Fair from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Ransom Memorial Hospital, 1301 S. Main St., Ottawa.

Fair activities include a bike safety event, vision screenings, dental screenings, and ambulance and LifeStar tours. Also, a breakfast of a breakfast burrito, fruit and milk will be served for $1 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the fair.
