West Franklin searching for new principal

By CLEON RICKEL, Herald Senior Writer

POMONA — West Franklin USD 287 has started a search for a new high school principal.

Mike Dorst, West Franklin High School principal, has been named assistant principal at Manhattan High School.

Dotson Bradbury, West Franklin superintendent, said he hopes to have a successor by mid-May.

The West Franklin school formally accepted Dorst’s resignation, which would be effective June 30, at their meeting Monday.

“I feel we’re very fortunate,” Bradbury said. “We’re early in the hiring season (for principals).

“... Sometimes districts are trying to fill vacancies in May, June and even July.”

In other matters, the board celebrated several milestones by students.

“It was a night of celebrations,” Bradbury said.

The West Franklin High School band presented trophies they won at a recent competition in Colorado. Music students also will attend a state competition in Salina later this month.

Members of the West Franklin High School chapters of the Future Business Leaders of America and the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America qualified for national contests later this summer.

Preliminary results also show that students at West Franklin Middle School won buildingwide Standard of Excellence in math and reading, and Williamsburg Elementary School won buildingwide Standard of Excellence in reading, Bradbury said.

The board decided to give students at the middle school and Williamsburg an early day off at the end of this school year as an incentive, he said.

In other matters, Bradbury said:

• He and the board are continuing to negotiate with Williamsburg city officials concerning the disposition of the vocational-agriculture shop and the high school football field in Williamsburg.

With the combination of the district’s high schools into one West Franklin High School, the district doesn’t need the facilities.

Negotiations are likely to continue into the May board meeting, he said.

Presently, the city of Williamsburg could likely lease the vo-ag building to store maintenance equipment, he said.

• The board accepted the resignation of Brock Campbell as head high school basketball coach.

Assistant coach Jason Nelson was hired as the new head basketball coach for next year. James Spencer was hired as an assistant boys’ coach.

• The board approved a $13,000 contract with J.D. Turner Co., Lawrence, for repairs to roofs at Appanoose, Pomona and Williamsburg.

• The board approved a proposal to join the Carl Perkins Consortium for vocational education programs through the Greenbush education cooperative at Girard.
