Tenants of burned house sought

WILLIAMSBURG — Law enforcement officers today are looking for renters of a house destroyed by fire Thursday afternoon north of Williamsburg.

Williamsburg and Pomona firefighers found the home, at 137 Haskell Road, engulfed by fire at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Alan Radcliffe, assistant Pomona fire chief, said. About 90 percent of the house was on fire and there was little firefighters could do other than contain it, he said.

No one was hurt in the blaze at the home, which had been rented by Michael and Kyana Smith, officials said. The Smith’s children were found staying with their grandparents, but a bulletin has been sent to other law enforcement agencies for help in locating their parents, Lt. Jimmie Dean, Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Dean said. The National Weather Service recorded 19 lightning strikes in western Franklin County and that is one possibility for the fire’s cause, he said.

The house was owned by Ellis Mortenson, Overland Park.

Officers had been to the house the day before, Dean said, but that the fire wouldn’t have been related.
