Housing supply finally catching up with housing demand in Ottawa

This past weekend’s Franklin County Board of Realtors Parade of Homes featured more than 50 homes throughout the area. A large enthusiastic and interested crowd came to see homes ranging from $72,000 to $1,640,000 Saturday and Sunday.

Those homes aren’t the only ones on the market, though. A new housing addition, The Coves at Tallgrass, is springing up near the industrial park off of Wilson Street and Davis Avenue. Four new home models being marketed by Century 21 Lantis and Associates offer renters, first-time home buyers and others their own four walls to build a life and call Ottawa home.

The first phase of homes on Elderberry Lane and Bluestem Drive include the one-level Cimarron and Fall Creek home styles as well as the two-story Rockford, Chautauqua and Sycamore home styles. Prices range from $94,900 to $114,900 for 836 square foot, 2-bedroom homes to 1,230 square foot, 3-bedroom homes — each complete with new appliances, dusk-to-dawn outdoor lights and more. That’s very affordable new housing.

Homes have varying setbacks as part of a unique “coving” design. Walking paths throughout the development, which may connect with the path at adjacent American Eagle Distribution Center, ensure strong neighborhood connections and an attractive streetscape.

The variety of homes available on the market suggests housing supply is finally catching up with housing demand. At least for now. Converting gawkers into buyers may be the bigger challenge.

Continued growth of major employers, including the planned intermodal in Gardner, is bound to drive even more people to seek affordable housing in a friendly near-by community like Ottawa. The growing housing inventory should ensure supply meets demand.
