A usually quiet farm in rural Douglas County was teeming with action Thursday morning. Hundreds of Old German Baptist Brethren Church members raised two huge tents yesterday to prepare for the church’s annual conference this weekend.
Organizers are estimating 5,000 to 6,000 brethren from across the United States to make the pilgrimage to southern Douglas County.
“It is a meeting to hold us in unity in our beliefs and our practices,” Darrell Shuck, minister at Willow Springs Old German Baptist Brethren Church west of Baldwin City, said.
Charles Beeghley is one of four ministers at Willow Springs Old German Baptist Brethren Church and owns the farm where the conference is taking place this year.
“We’ve looked forward to this for almost two years,” Beeghley said. “We’re just happy to have everyone here with us.”
