ECKAN, lawmakers to speak in Topeka

Several staffers at the East Central Kansas Economic Opportunity Corp. and area legislators will speak at the Kansas Conference on Poverty Tuesday and Wednesday in Topeka.
Sen. Pat Apple and Reps. Bill Feuerborn and Bill Otto will be on a legislative panel to discuss how social and economic policies are made.
Richard Jackson, ECKAN chief executive officer, and Lisa Rivers, Volunteer Center director, will lead a workshop “Local Approaches to Best Practices in Youth Development.”
The workshop will discuss the background and the success of the Ottawa Youth In Government program and the Youth Action Council.
Jackson and Aaron Heckman will lead the workshop “Local and Statewide Advocacy Strategies for Non-Profit Leaders.”
The workshop will talk about ways to serve as advocates for clients and community service organizations.
Tracey Ball, who represented ECKAN at a legislative conference in Washington, will talk about her experiences in meeting congressional leaders.
