Salute to retiring teachers

Staff, students and friends of Garfield Elementary School will be bidding farewell to a great lady this month. Janie Hainline — many knew her as Janie Kuehn — will be retiring at the end of the school year. She will be a tough act to follow.
For 12 years, I watched Mrs. Hainline work her magic. I was always amazed at the connection between she and the children. I never saw her blow her cool. Neither did I ever talk to a Garfield student who didn’t love her. I am a crossing guard and I talk to a lot of Garfield kids.
It is my honor to be Mrs. Hainline’s friend. I wish her a long, happy retirement.
Teachers Deb Dailey and Tammy Mosher also are retiring. These two great teachers will be missed by all of us.
My granddaughters, Ali and Laura Sims, both had Mrs. Mosher for fifth grade. Both loved her. Laura was always going on about “Mosher Bucks.” Mrs. Mosher even took Laura fishing at her parents’ farm pond.
Both girls also were in Mrs. Dailey’s class in second grade. Mrs. Dailey made a profound bond with both girls. All through middle school, Ali would get off the bus and go into Garfield to see her. Laura once brought her a frog license plate for her car.
Thanks to both of you wonderful ladies for all you did for my girls and for all other Garfield kids. I want you to know that both of you and Mrs. Hainline will be in my heart and thoughts forever.
May each of you have a long, happy retirement.
— Jim Starkey, Ottawa
