Citizen Scholars: Recognizing top students who also are good citizens

Being able to balance school and a number of extracurricular activities can be as important as good grades.
Especially when those activities improve society.
That’s the premise of The Ottawa Herald’s Citizen Scholar program, which recognizes area seniors who balance homework with work in their communities.
“Early civic involvement is important for youth to learn that everyone — regardless of age — has a role to play in strengthening our towns,” Jeanny Sharp, Herald editor and publisher, said.
This is the seventh year of the program.
“Academics are very important, but we wanted to honor students who also actively participate in the community,” Sharp said. It’s about how well they balance these aspects of their lives.”
The Herald solicits up to three nominations from each school in Franklin County. A committee reviews nominations and selects a scholar from each high school. Each Elite Citizen Scholar receives a $100 award.
