Elite Citizen Scholar: MEGAN KETCHUM, Ottawa High School

“It takes the hard work of everyone in a community to make it a better place,” Megan Ketchum said.

And if everyone in a community pitched in, their lives and the lives of others would be much improved, she said.

“Some people never stand up for what they believe in and try to cause change,” Ketchum said. “If people did try, they would know that they were doing their best to make the community a better place.”

Make a Difference Day, a community service event in Ottawa, was an event that meant the most to her, Roberts said. She collected canned goods and helped organize food donated to Hope House, a food pantry.

“I knew that I was doing something to help those who were less fortunate than me, but while I was asking others for food I was able to inform them about people who are in need of help,” she said. “Hopefully, my actions caused others to want to volunteer, also.”

Other service activities she has been part of include blood drives, school book fairs, a trick-or-treat for UNICEF event and raising money for breast cancer research.

Ketchum has been involved in several activities at school. They include student council, National Honor Society, Key Club, yearbook and newspaper, Pep Club, Scholars Bowl, SADD and Renaissance. She was involved in several sports including volleyball, basketball, tennis manager, cross country and cheerleading.

She has worked as a lifeguard and swimming lesson instructor for the Ottawa Recreation Commission.

She plans to attend the University of Kansas, majoring in chemical engineering with a pre-medical concentration.

She is the daughter of William and Jan Ketchum, Ottawa.
