Elite Citizen Scholar: VINCENT OUELLETTE, Central Heights High School

Vincent Ouellette said he believes so strongly in helping others, he joined the Cutler Township Fire Department as soon as he was old enough.

“It is an opportunity for me to help others who are in need, whether it be because they wrecked their car or their house is on fire,” he said.

Ouellette also volunteers his time at New Horizon’s Therapeutic Riding Center, helping people with disabilities ride horses.

“I have been able to help others who most of the time can’t do most of the things we take for granted on a daily basis,” he said. “Some of these things include being able to walk and keep their balance or even talk in normal conversation.”

Such active citizenship is important because it gives people a chance to help those who are less fortunate, Ouellette said.

“In order for our country to succeed in the future, I feel that there needs to be a large amount of active citizenship in our country ... Help others who cannot do what the majority of the people in the United States can,” he said.

Ouellette is involved in numerous events with his church and 4-H Club. Some of those activities include the Christian Youth Rodeo Association, junior rodeo Bible camp, Bible school and County 4-H Council.

At school, he has been active in Robotics, FFA, Fellowship, Key Club, football, basketball, track, SADD, band, Biology Club, Scholar Bowl, Spanish Club and the National Honor Society.

He worked on the family farm in exchange for his 4-H livestock projects. Some of the work included building fences, sawing wood, raking hay, feeding hay and checking cows as well as operating heavy equipment.

Ouellette plans to attend Kansas State University, majoring in animal science or animal nutrition.

He is the son of Edward and Darla Ouellette, Rantoul.
