Nuclear group gives nod to Wolf Creek extension

By The Herald Staff

WOLF CREEK — The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says that there are no environmental impacts that would prevent Wolf Creek from having its nuclear license extended for 20 more years.

The NRC staff made the ruling as part of the agency’s final environmental impact statement. Issuing the report is one step in dealing with an application by Wolf Creek officials to extend the operating license for the nuclear power plant near Burlington.

The current operating license expires March 11, 2025. Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation submitted an application for renewal of the license in October 2006.

The final environmental impact statement isn’t the final NRC action on the license renewal application. The agency staff is completing its safety evaluation report, and the NRC’s Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards will evaluate that report and make its recommendation before the agency makes a final decision.

The Wolf Creek final environmental impact statement is available on the NRC’s Web site: http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/doc-collections/nuregs/staff/sr1437/supplement32.
