Wellsville graduates toss their caps in the air.

WELLSVILLE: ‘Silly’ describes students’ journey

During Sunday’s graduation, Wellsville seniors wore either gowns or stoles that nearly matched the blazing blue sky.

At the end of Sunday’s graduation, they also wore Silly String. At the end, they marched to the middle of the football field and as the Wellsville High School fight song was played by the high school band, they shook their little spray cans and then pelted each other with the Silly String and threw their mortar boards into the sky.

It was all a part of being part of the Eagles Class of 2008. The class has a sense of deviltry, tossing spit wads on classroom ceilings or getting written up for infractions, senior Lauren Dees said during Sunday’s commencement.

“Remember as kids whenever we were on a trip and we always asked our parents ‘Are we there yet?’” Dees said. “... They would tell us one more mile or so away.

“... But its not the end of the mile, its about the journey.”

But above all, the class was a close-knit community that looked out for one another during the journey, she said.

Dees mentioned that when she moved to Wellsville in 2004, she was surprised by the number of students who went out of their way to welcome her.

Being at Wellsville presented “so many amazing opportunities I don’t think you would experience unless you were here.”

Senior Colin Wright also sounded the same note. He was homeschooled most of his life but he decided to enroll at Wellsville High School.

“I decided to take a chance and step outside of my comfort zone,” Wright said.

He figured he would be regarded as an outsider but found that he, too, was welcomed and became part of the tight-knit community.

Taking the chance paid off and he urged others to take a chance.

“It may not be comfortable for you but it would be beneficial,” he said.
