Benefit planned for injured motorcyclist

By The Herald Staff

Friends of an Ottawa man injured in a motorcycle wreck last week are planning a Poker Run benefit for him Saturday.

A benefit for Harold Bishop, 31, Ottawa, will begin with registration at 11 a.m. Saturday at Drivers Sports Cafe 222 E. Logan St., Samantha Peters, a friend who is helping to publicize the benefit, said. The ride will begin at noon and will include four stops, ending at the 700 Club, 232 N. Main St. in Pomona.

The benefit is planned to help the family with expenses associated with the accident and loss of income while Bishop is unable to work, Peters said.

Harold Bishop, 31, Ottawa, was injured when he lost control of his motorcycle about 7:30 p.m. May 21 in the 800 block of South Main Street, Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Travis Jones said.

Bishop was taken to Overland Park Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries and has since been discharged, a hospital spokesperson said. He could not be reached for comment.

Bishop was driving his motorcycle with a group of about eight other motorcyclists when he lost control, the highway patrol trooper said. Bishop, who had been headed southbound on Main Street, ended up on the lawn of Briscoe’s Pharmacy on the northeast corner of Ninth and Main streets, Jones said. The motorcycle skidded and tumbled about the length of half a city block, coming to rest in the lawn near China Palace restaurant, southwest of the intersection.

Excessive speed was a factor in the accident, the trooper said, and Bishop was issued a ticket for speeding.

Bishop was not wearing a helmet and alcohol was not involved, Jones said. Witnesses told him they saw some of the motorcycles in the group doing tricks as they drove down the highway.
