Donor helping Sacred Heart start preschool

By COURTNEY SERVAES, Herald Staff Writer

Diane Chapman has been praying for a preschool for a long time.

Chapman said she and other Sacred Heart Catholic Elementary School officials have been talking about adding a preschool to their program for about five years.

“We had a donor come forth with the opportunity to help us out,” Chapman, principal of the elementary school, said.

After receiving help with the funding, Josh Walker, with Loyd Builders Inc., 2126 S. Elm St., said the Ottawa City Commission had to approve an ordinance for a conditional-use permit — which it did last week — on the property located at 503 S. Hickory St.

“The next step is getting the site plan approved,” Walker said.

Walker said the building still is in development, but he hopes to have the site plan approved by late July.

Wynndee Lee, city director of planning and codes, said there are a couple of other steps the school must take, but for now it has the green light to move forward.

Chapman said the school is planning to offer a 3-year-old and 4-year-old program with two classes each. Each of the four classes would enroll about 12 students.

“We’re very excited about the opportunity it will give our families and Ottawa,” Chapman said.

“There are a lot of hoops to jump through,” she said. “The time frame and the way things have progressed has been longer than we anticipated.”

Despite the delay, Chapman said the program would allow Ottawa families — not just Catholic families — the chance to experience a faith-based education.

“I tell my kids every day that God gives each one of us multiple gifts and talents,” she said. “He gives us those to develop and go forth and do his work.”

Chapman said the value of a faith-based education is that the students are encouraged to look at the bigger picture.

“We just really share with them that the world is bigger than me,” she said. “We stress that life is bigger than that, and that God has bigger plans than that.”
