Ottawa woman killed in wreck near Anderson County line

By BRIAN WILLIAMS, Herald Staff Writer

An Ottawa woman was killed in a one-car wreck early Saturday morning.

Maria Carmen Lear, 31, was a passenger in a 2000 Nissan Xterra that was eastbound at 2:08 a.m. on K-31 just south of the Franklin and Anderson County line, according to Kansas Highway Patrol reports.

The vehicle driven by Eric M. Bowers, 35, Ottawa, left the road and ran into the south ditch. Bowers over-corrected and lost control of the vehicle, which went onto the roadway then back into the south ditch and struck a field entrance, which caused it to flip over.

Bowers was transported to Anderson County Hospital, Garnett, and another passenger, Jason George Ferris, 37, Horse Shoe, N.C., was transported to the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan., for injuries.

Bob Hallinan, University of Kansas Medical Center media relations, said that at this time, the hospital could not confirm or deny that Ferris was there. Anderson County Hospital said that Bowers was not there as of this morning, and was not able to say if he had been there earlier.

Lear was wearing a seat belt, while Bowers and Ferris were not, according to the highway patrol.

Lear was pronounced dead at the scene. Dengel and Son Mortuary, Ottawa, is in charge of arrangements.
