Innovative composer among summer concert performers

For many area residents, the sounds of summer are of violins and cellos.

“We’ve always had some free concerts,” Alice Joy Lewis, Ottawa Suzuki Strings founder, said.

The Ottawa Suzuki Institute Mid-Southwest summer program, which has brought musical talent to Ottawa to study each June since 1975, has public performances each evening.

Although not free, a concert Lewis is especially looking forward to is a performance by Mark O’Connor, who plays the fiddle and violin.

“He is looked at as establishing a new American music, because he worked in so many styles,” Lewis said.

O’Connor is versed in classical, Cajun, flamenco, jazz and fiddle.

“I have three pillars of musical influence and training. The pillars are western classical music, American folk music and jazz. Those are things I studied as a child and continue to be interested in,” O’Connor said on his Web site, www.markoconnor.com

O’Connor has invited Brian Lewis on the violin, Roger Myers on the viola and Amy Barston on the cello, to join him for a number he wrote on the fiddle, Lewis said.

O’Connor’s concert will be 7 p.m. Saturday at the Ottawa University Chapel, 1001 S. Cedar St.

Tickets will be available at the door or can be reserved at the door by calling (785) 242-5200 ext. 5437.
