School official’s hearing in abuse case set

By JODIE GARCIA, Herald Staff Writer

An area superintendent charged with battery, child abuse and intimidation is scheduled to hear the state’s evidence against him in August.

A preliminary hearing for Jim Reece, superintendent of the Central Heights school district, was set for 10 a.m. Aug. 1 at Franklin County District Court during a status hearing Monday morning.

Reece was arrested by Ottawa police and booked into the Franklin County jail May 13 on suspicion of child abuse, aggravated battery and aggravated intimidation of a victim.

Prosecutors allege the incidents happened May 10 and May 11 and involve a 14-year-old girl.

Police said the incident happened in the 1100 block of Augusta Lane in Ottawa but declined to provide further details.

Reece was released from jail on $10,000 bond.

During the preliminary hearing, the state will present evidence in the case and a judge will decide whether the case will continue based on that evidence.

Reece became Central Heights superintendent last year. Before that, he was superintendent at Caldwell in south central Kansas, and at Healy in western Kansas.

After being placed on administrative leave after his arrest, he has returned to his duties.
