Motorcycle wrecks bring safety reminders

By JENALEA MYERS, Herald Staff Writer

Although motorcycle helments aren’t required in Kansas for adults, they’re still a good idea, law enforcement and highway officials say.

Lt. Adam Weingartner, with the Ottawa Police Department, said wearing helmets and being aware of surroundings are important tips motorcyclists should remember.

“Most of the accidents here are turning accidents,” Weingartner said of causes of area motorcycle accidents.

The area recently has experienced a number of motorcycle-related accidents, law enforcement reports show.

The most serious accident involved a Garnett man, who was injured and later died when his motorcycle was struck by a car earlier this month.

Howard L. “Les” Mead, 61, was seriously injured June 6 when the motorcycle he was driving was struck by a car driven by Mary B. Rockers, 45, Garnett, according to a report from the Kansas Highway Patrol. Mead died June 14. In that wreck, Rockers failed to yield and struck the motorcycle in the intersection, the report said.

Many times, a vehicle driver doesn’t see a motorcyclist, Weingartner said.

“Sometimes, a motorcyclist tries to turn in front of a vehicle and gets hit,” he said.
